The Pebbles

The Shepherd of Readersburg | 06 June 2021 | Fiction: Once when Mini went out strolling around their new home, she found a few pebbles. These were strange pebbles.

They were perfectly oval. They were all the same size, of Mini's palm. And they were the same colour: mauve. I mean seriously? Is mauve even a colour for pebbles to have?

But there they were, mauve oval pebbles. Five of them.

Mini carried them home. Now what to do with them? Just keep it in the drawer, she thought.

So she kept the pebbles in the drawer. She would pull out the drawer and take them out every day.

At times, she would mount one pebble on top of the other. They would slip and fall. But she made an attempt anyway.

A few days later, there was an announcement on her school Google class. There was going to be a photo parade titled My Garden Story.

All the kids had to click photos of their gardens and post it on their online school group.

Mini, like all her classmates, started looking around for a good photo in her small garden. She borrowed her mother's camera and went around the garden every evening clicking random photos.

She liked a few. But she thought she could get a better one.

So she waited before sending her photos to the group.

One afternoon, when she was playing with the pebbles, she had a thought.

She rushed to the garden and arranged the pebbles on the bed of the sunflower plant. She then went for the camera and clicked a photo from her room.

She sat at the window of her room and clicked a photo of the sunflower plant with the mauve pebbles at its foot. The photo also had an earthen flower pot that hung from the ceiling of their porch.

She posted her photo on the group the next morning. The parade was the day after that. Mini's photo attracted tremendous attention.

They asked about the pebbles. And she told them about her mystery discovery during a casual walk. Mini made a lot of friends in this new place.
