Fall of Jet Airways

It was a week when two giants of this world collapsed. One is Jet Airways and the other is the Notre Dame church.

Eh? Jet Airways? What happened to it? Well, in very simple words, Jet Airways is no more. Yes. It has stopped all flights. It has shut down. Though Jet has officially said that this shut down is temporary, its pilots and employees have taken it as permanent. And everyone else has too. With this, 22,000 people have lost their job.

But why did it shut down? That’s because the company ran out of money. The company did not have enough money to pay its employees or run other operations.

The pilots and other employees had not been paid for the past three months. Now they are out of job too.

Why should it be such a thing? Well, it is huge that an airline of the stature of Jet Airways is no more. That’s because it is not just about one airline or some airline. Jet Airways was one of the best airlines in India. It was the first private aviation company to fly international. While so many other airlines shut down within a couple of years of taking off, Jet flew strong ever since it started in 1993. It was founded and owned by Indian entrepreneur, Naresh Goyal.

It does not sound good if such a strong business should fold up. Besides, India has just seen another of its very own big companies, Flipkart, being bought by an American company, Walmart. Earlier, Kingfisher Airlines fell. Then there was Air Deccan. Indian Airlines and Air India had to be merged. The list of airlines that shut down is long.

It does not present a very good picture for India that businesses should keep failing. Maybe some policies need to be tweaked so that it becomes easy to start and sustain a business in India. The environment has to be friendly for business.
